ACLA News

Thank you Mr. Gale!

Thanks to the 82 alumni who attended last month's ACLA Summer reunion in Geneva, with special guest Terence Gale.

We were very pleased to see many familiar faces, and to receive almost one hundred messages of congratulations for Mr. Gale. Among those in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Clivaz, as well as a number of former teachers, including Matthew Leitner, Cynthia Rochat, Cyril Boschert, Pamela Harris, John and Patricia Ragget, and many more. Welcome to ACLA!

Tahiro Hashizume (CDL '04) and Amer Siddiqi (CDL '87) were those who travelled the furthest, coming from Japan and Saudi Arabia respectively. Read their comments below!

" Travelling over 7'000 miles from Tokyo to be at CDL for Mr. Gale's retirement was the natural thing to do for me, as I greatly appreciate the role Mr. Gale has played in my life and CDL has a special place in my heart.

Being at Collège du Léman has changed me and allowed me to grow into the person that I am today. Mr. Gale was more than a Headmaster, he was a magician! Getting ESL students like me to understand cosine rules while teaching them English, being gentle but firm as a "boss" to the yearbook team, and being both a Headmaster and a traffic controller as he hearded us off to buses, often still carrying his day's mathematics text books!  - Tahiro Hashizume"
------------------
" By returning for the CDL reunion in June I wanted to relive my memories from  more than 20 years ago. CDL played a major role in my childhood, and continues to do so today. Since graduating in 1987 I once returned to Geneva but without CDL I felt that I was no longer in "my" Geneva. This time I took the train to school, hung out with the students there and spent some time with CDL staff. Mr Gale had never taught me, but just hearing his name and seeing him again brought me right back to teenagehood, providing an immediate link with CDL.

CDL Graduation

On June 27th, the CDL Class of 2009 graduated from High School and entered the alumni family. Congratulations!

This year's keynote speaker was parent Mathilde Delhoume-Debreu, Director at Procter and Gamble, whose daughter Victoria was among the graduating class. After the official ceremony and two short musical performances from students graduates and guests returned to CDL for an impressive buffet. We look forward to hearing back from the Class of 2009 as they advance on their journey to university and "real-life"!

Efficient and responsible response to H1N1 cases at CDL

On July 7th, seven children showing symptoms of the H1N1 flu were isolated under close supervision of the school management and medical staff. Their health is fine and they followed a separate activity programme throughout their isolation. Summer Campus is continuing as planned and these students have now re-integrated classes. A few more students still believed to possibly suffer from the flu are finishing their period of isolation in a villa on campus.

As other cases of H1N1 appear in camps in Switzerland and neighbouring France, Collège du Léman's response has become a model in terms of swine flu incident management.

CDL Preparing for the arrival of new boarders

Preparations are in full swing for the 250 boarders expected to move in to the school's nine villas for the new school year in August. 2009-10 promises to be a very exciting year and CDL is pleased to welcome the arrival of a new leader for the boarding program, Mr. Christophe Fernandez. Some spaces are still available for next year in boarding, so please feel free to visit CDL's new boarding website for more information on admissions!

Katie Holliday (Pierson) says...

CDL was an integral part of my childhood. I began my education at CDL in the fifth grade and ultimately graduated in 1968. I treasure my yearbooks and refer to them often. My dear friends, Gita Chapuisat Saunders and Jane Blood Siegrfied, were fellow students at CDL, and my companion, Don Fraser, was a classmate in the ninth grade. We participated in a mini reunion last month in Savannah, where about 15 of us gathered to remember our days at CDL and catch up with old friends. I look forward to receiving the Alumni Newsletter and keeping up with CDL news and events. Thank you Robert Barzelay for tellng me about this great website! - Katie Pierson Holliday
